Car and Driver Takes a First Drive in the 2018 BMW M550i xDrive
Recently, a writer from Car and Driver was fortunate enough to receive the opportunity to take the 2018 BMW 550i xDrive for a drive on an autobahn in Germany, and he took full advantage of the chance to open up the throttle and relish the 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine's forceful nature.
Expected to land on US shores soon, the 2018 550i xDrive is the fastest 5 Series vehicle BMW has produced to date, sprinting to a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds. The 4.4-liter, DOHC V8 engine matches with an 8-speed automatic transmission to produce 456 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.
Driving dynamics can be adjusted to your mood or road conditions. Comfort mode, the default setting, features lighter steering, a softer-feeling suspension and a quieter sounding engine. The xDrive all-wheel drive system (also tuned to the Comfort mode), allocates torque to meet the situation, while the Adaptive M suspension makes for a plush, smooth ride that boasts minimal body roll.
The vehicle offers both Sport and Sport+ modes, both of which enjoy M-specific tuning for the steering and suspension to provide precision handling and enhanced driving engagement.
Inside and out, the BMW M550i xDrive is adorned with M-specific touches such as special badging, distinctive brake calipers and M Sport steering wheel, tailpipes and brakes.
