BMW i3 Receives World Car Award at New York International Auto Show

The new BMW i3 was honored with the inaugural 2017 World Urban Car Award at the New York International Auto Show in April. The award was conceived by World Car Awards to honor alternative energy vehicles that offer a new solution to rapidly increasing city traffic and congestion.

The higher energy density of the lithium ion cells allow the new 94 Ah battery in the BMW i3 to offer 50 percent greater capacity (33kWh). The BMW i team kept the battery's dimensions the same while delivering a significant increase in the vehicle's range.

Introduced in 2014, the i3 redefines urban mobility with its innovative eDrive transmission, intelligent ConnectedDrive Services and groundbreaking body composition.

In a press release, Ludwig Willisch, Head of BMW Group Region Americas, commented, “We are delighted and honored that the BMW i3 has been recognized as the World Urban Car of the Year. This award highlights BMW Group’s commitment to sustainable mobility through BMW’s first all-electric vehicle made primarily of carbon fiber. The design brief for the BMW i3 was to create a Mega City Vehicle for the cities of the future. Today, the new 2017 BMW i3 (94 Ah) provides more range paired with a high-level of dynamic performance, making it the perfect urban vehicle for people around the world.”
